FAQs on Fixed Deposits
A fixed deposit product for companies and firms offering secure returns with flexibility in tenure and payout options.
There are primarily two types of Fixed Deposits – Cumulative FDs and Non-Cumulative FDs.
Cumulative Fixed Deposits: Interest earned is reinvested in the FD account at regular intervals, usually quarterly or annually, leading to compounding. The maturity amount includes both principal and accumulated interest.
Non-Cumulative Fixed Deposits: Interest is paid out periodically—monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, or annually—depending on investor preference. Compounding benefits do not apply.
Callable FDs allow premature withdrawal with penalties; Non-Callable FDs generally offer higher rates but keep funds locked in for the selected tenure.
Minimum and maximum deposit amounts vary by financial institution and FD scheme. Banks and NBFCs commonly set minimum amounts from ₹1,000 to ₹25,000, while some schemes may not set a maximum deposit limit.
Income from fixed-deposit interest is taxable under the Income Tax Act, 1961. Interest is added to total income and taxed at the applicable income-tax slab rate.
Investors may claim a deduction of up to ₹1.5 lakh under Section 80C for the principal invested in eligible Tax Saver FDs, subject to applicable conditions.
TDS applicable: Interest earnings are subject to TDS as per income-tax law.
Premature withdrawal fee: Penalties can range from 0.5% to 1.5% based on the deposit amount and tenure.
